This documentary looks at teen movies from the recent golden age (mid-90’s-mid-00’s) and
recognises similar traits of the genre. So you’ve got alienation, sex, murder, tribes, and raucous
holidays. ‘Beyond Clueless’, is exclusively made up of clips from enjoyable films with a review style narration (delivered by ‘The Craft’s lead actress Fairuza Balk) and the opinions of
writer/director Charlie Lyne, who more interestingly ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to
fund this movie.
You’d expect interviews with the stars in a documentary of this kind, but there’s no retrospective
material at all, which makes it feel like a ‘Teen Movies Greatest Hits moments’ and not much
more.
Lyne, at only 24, may well have go on to make some interesting movies, but this is clearly a first
step.
